David L. Carden, Resolving Disputes from the Perspective of a Lawyer, a Diplomat, and a Mediator

Please joint us for a live-streamed event on February 2, 2022 at 12:00 pm with The Honorable David L. Carden who will talk about private and public disputes and how they can be resolved drawing on his experiences from his unique career as a practicing lawyer, an ambassador, and a private mediator.

A native of Indiana and a graduate of DePauw University and Indiana University Law School, Mr. Carden practiced for many years in Chicago at Kirkland & Ellis, Coffield Ungaretti, and Jones Day before relocating to New York in 2000.  In private practice, he led Jones Day’s securities litigation and enforcement practice and represented clients in large, high-profile securities fraud cases, including cases involving derivatives, collateralized debt obligations, credit default swaps, currency trading, options, and commodities.  He also coordinated the defense of litigation and handled investigations in Asia and the Middle East.

From 2011 to 2013, Mr. Carden served as United States Representative to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) with the rank of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary.  Based in Jakarta, he traveled throughout Asia and advocated issues including economic development, trade liberalization, pandemic prevention and preparedness, environmental protection, and historical and cultural preservation.

Mr. Carden currently serves as a mediator in private commercial disputes.  He also serves on the  board of the Weinstein International Foundation, which promotes mediation as a vehicle for resolving noncommercial, public interest disputes around the world.

Mr. Carden is a passionate advocate for public service.  He chairs the Advisory Board of Indiana University’s Center for Rural Engagement.  He is a frequent speaker and has published a book and many articles on diplomacy, national security, crisis management, public service, and other topics.
