Dr. David A. Ansell, Author of The Death Gap: How Inequality Kills

Please join us for a live-streamed event on December 10, 2020 at 12:00 p.m. with David A. Ansell, MD, MPH when he will discuss his most recent book, The Death Gap: How Inequality Kills.

On April 15, 2020, in the midst of the Coronavirus Pandemic, Dr. Ansell was interviewed on WBEZ, addressing COVID-19’s disproportionate impact on the African American community.  He noted that 70% of all COVID-19 related deaths in Chicago are of African Americans, even though they comprise only 30% of the population.  He discussed access to healthcare disparities as the primary driver of the disparate outcome.

Dr. Ansell was uniquely qualified to address this issue.  As Rush University Medical Center’s first leader of community health equity, a role he assumed in October of 2016, Dr. Ansell is leading Rush’s strategy to be a catalyst for community health and economic vitality on Chicago’s West Side.

After growing up in Binghamton, New York Dr. Ansell attended Franklin and Marshall College and the SUNY Upstate Medical University.  He did his residency training at Chicago’s Cook County Hospital (n/k/a Stroger Hospital), and then served as an attending physician there for 13 years.  Dr. Ansell recounted his experiences at Cook County Hospital in a 2011 memoir, County: Life, Death and Politics at Chicago’s Public Hospital.
