Illinois Supreme Court Chief Justice Anne Burke

Please join us for a live-streamed event on September 9 at 12:00 p.m. with Chief Justice Anne Burke of the Illinois Supreme Court.

Throughout her career, Justice Burke has been devoted to child welfare issues.  Before attending law school, while working as a physical education teacher for the Chicago Park District in 1968, Justice Burke (along with Eunice Kennedy and others) was a founder of the Special Olympics, which were held for the first time at Soldier Field.  Before joining the Appellate Court, she served as special counsel to the Governor for Child Welfare Services. She has also served on the National Review Board for the Protection of Children and Young People, appointed by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. She was instrumental in conducting the surveys and studies that supported the seminal John Jay Report.

In 1987, Illinois Governor James R. Thompson appointed Justice Burke to the Illinois Court of Claims, and she was reappointed by Governor Jim Edgar in 1991. She was the first woman to serve on the Illinois Court of Claims. In August 1995, she was appointed to the Appellate Court, First District, and was subsequently elected to that office in 1996. Upon the retirement of Justice Mary Ann McMorrow in 2006, Justice Burke was appointed to the Illinois Supreme Court. She was elected to a full ten-year term in November 2008 and was retained for a second ten-year term in 2018.  On September 10, 2019, her colleagues elected her Chief Justice of the Illinois Supreme Court, succeeding former Chief Justice Lloyd A. Karmeier.
