
Professor Alison LaCroix Discusses The Interbellum Constitution: The Surprising Story of States’ Rights before the Civil War
On May 27th, the Lawyers Club of Chicago is pleased to present Alison L. LaCroix, the Robert Newton Reid Professor of Law at the University of Chicago, who will speak on “The Interbellum Constitution: The Surprising Story of States’ Rights before the Civil War.” Ms. LaCriox is a nationally recognized scholar of US legal history, specializing in constitutional law, federalism, and eighteenth- and nineteenth-century legal thought. She holds a PhD in history from Harvard University, a J.D. from Yale Law School, and a B.A. summa cum laude in history from Yale. She joined the University of Chicago faculty in 2006 and is a prolific writer, having published two books—The Interbellum Constitution: Union, Commerce, and Slavery in the Age of Federalism (2024) and The Ideological Origins of American Federalism (2010)— and many scholarly articles in law reviews, scholarly publications, and books. In 2021, President Biden appointed her to the Presidential Commission on the Supreme Court of the United States.
